About the event

Join us for a drink and discussion about literature and art in the twentieth century, tracing the threads of romanticism as it twists and turns throughout modernist works. This month we’ll be thinking about neo-romantic modernisms in response to the return to home.

Just as modernist studies seem now to be revisiting the origins and inception of given artistic activity, this network will commence by discussing the various manifestations of the Romanticist theme ‘Return to Home.’

We are delighted to invite thinkers of all disciplines to contribute this month to a discussion about the way landscape, domesticity and the home is explored in Romanticism and the significance of this as it appears in modern works.

We will look at several short but significant texts as a catalyst for this conversation.

o Two of these readings are small extracts from Alexandra Harris' 'Romantic Moderns'. The first extract is taken from the prologue of the book and effectively identifies the intellectual and artistic landscape of interwar Britain as one steeped in contemplations of a romantic past. The second is from the first chapter, providing an example of how even the most abstract art can reveal a sense of place. Both these short extracts have accompanying visual forms which we may also look at for reference.

o These theoretic pieces will be accompanied by the poem ‘I Travelled among Unknown Men’ by William Wordsworth, conveying an idea of the way the Romantics realised the notion of home and how this might relate to artistic experimentation in the twentieth century.

All readings will be made available for participants ahead of time and circulated via email.

Information about this month's image:

The aim of our network is to explore the influence of romanticism on modernist texts. Our logo reflects this impulse, with fragments of romantic works in a collage that incorporates elements of modernity. This month's reading group sees a fragment of the German Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich's famous oil painting 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog' looking out over 'Peasant's hut between Naples and Portici' by John Robert Cozens.
